Instead of providing exceptional service to justify a large tip, some restaurants and service professionals automatically add a service charge to your bill “for your convenience.” Who are they kidding? Business owners, repair people, salespeople, servers, and tech support could really make things convenient for customers if they: • Showed up on time • Provided virtual assistance • Anticipated needs instead of texting, chatting, and ignoring customers • Empathized instead of reading from a script • Offered products and solutions on an easy-to-navigate Web site • Went out of their way to be helpful • Did something extra just because they could—for example, the repair person who diagnosed a problem over the phone; the pharmacist who made timely, effective OTC recommendations during a family vacation emergency: the florist who didn’t charge a delivery fee “because I drive by your aunt’s house on my way home” What do you add for the genuine convenience of your customers? At one time, every person you know had no online presence. Today, many people show up in Internet searches—in public records, on genealogy sites, as alumni, in industry and organization directories, etc. Choose to build an online presence that reflects well on you by starting small and growing. Here are some ideas for first steps: • Create a LinkedIn profile • Update your member page in your Chamber of Commerce’s online directory • Create an about.me page—a one-page Web site that tells others about you • Sign up for Twitter and tweet about your business, your volunteer work, your favorite cause • Write an article about something you care about and submit it to an online article directory Where will you start building your online presence? Teleseminars and Webinars are great ways to learn something new without incurring travel and lodging costs. The price you pay may be your privacy. If you want to keep your identity a secret (perhaps you are checking out your competition or you are brushing up on skills that your clients expect you to have), look for these signs the session is being recorded: • The invitation tells you to sign up—even if you can’t make it—so you can receive the recording • You are told there is a recording in progress when you join the call or the meeting • The presenter welcomes you then asks for a moment to start the recording • Words like podcast and on air give it away • Anyone might take a screen shot of a chat box or other online conversation Be aware. Realize that presenters are most likely recording and some may even offer the recording—including your input—for sale or as a bonus with purchase at a future date. If you are the presenter, ask yourself • Am I being honest with my audience about recordings? • How do my recording policies and procedures affect prospects and clients and their opinion of me? • How can I offer this valuable information and still protect other people’s privacy? We are not all super models, movie stars, or professional athletes. Short of developing a cure for cancer or orchestrating world peace, how can you get noticed? • Take a stand for what you believe • Help someone else • Contribute your time, talent, or resources • Do random acts of kindness • Be an active participant You can do all of these things by blogging, engaging in social networking, volunteering, and joining organizations you want to support (a local food bank, your Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity….). How will you get noticed? Building your online presence is like a race. You need • A starting point—no online presence whatsoever • An end goal—knowing prospective customers will find you (and your products and services) through well-written articles, knowledgeable blog posts, helpful social media updates, fresh Web site content, and e-books that answer their questions • A plan to cover the ground in between the two • The mindset that says this is neither a sprint nor a marathon—it’s just part of your daily routine • A team to support you and help you achieve your goalsWhat do you need to do this week to make steady progress building your online presence?
